Omar Ayabarus
Born and raised in Indonesia and moved to the Netherlands at age 11, I pride myself in my stubbornness in adapting and asserting myself in unknown environments, with nothing but curiosity and an open mind (which I might've gotten from my mom).
I started my studies in Graphic Design, in the midst of covid 2020, at Willem de Kooning Academy freshly dropped out of Architecture after missing a creative itch that simply couldn't be scratched at TU Delft.
Having moved at an early age, I struggled with culture shock that came with assimilating to a whole different country. I found comfort and home on the Internet. Coupled with my hobby in gaming, this sparked my interest in the web and anything digital. During my studies I got to explore this interest of mine, which bloomed into my passion for (web)design and creative coding in which I aim to incorporate elements of the coded language within my design process.
My fascination in the digital media, which I got to develop further within my graduation project Meta-Morphosis, has led me towards the importance of practicing ethical digital design within my practice, by exploring the intersection between design and post-digital developments. Critically engaging with the media we work with to become a critical maker, instead of a passive consumer.
I believe that we could use a layer of fun that is recognizable from the internet culture into web design. Creating digital platforms and identity that involves the user, encouraging designer and user in a reciprocal exchange of ideas and experiences, subverting from the one-sided relationship with the digital work that is found too often in current design trends.
